The Disadvantage of Social Media- A True Story

Disadvantages of Social Media

I know, most of us love: social media and can’t seem to start the day without taking a few selfies and posting them on Instagram. However, it can’t be denied, that this trend has increased the feeling of jealousy, and insecurity, need for validation. And that is one of the biggest disadvantage of social mediaconstant comparison with others. I agree, that there are advantages and disadvantages of Social Media. But, unfortunately, GenZ and even millennials get attracted to the negatives of social media.

The hunger for ‘likes’ & ‘followers‘ is so huge that we keep comparing ourselves with others at every level.

I was in a similar race till I fell flat on my face. So, here I bring you the real-life short story about social media and how it can change our perceptions.

Short Story on Disadvantage of Social Media

This incident changed my perspective and also showed me the disadvantage of Social Media.

So, Let’s start the story-

A couple of years back, I met Jenny on Facebook, an Indian residing in the US. We started chatting and instantly, became good friends. We used to chat with each other for hours together.

Every three months, she would post her travel pictures, in the most exotic locations of the world like Paris, Italy, Venice, Greece, and many more. I kept wondering how she was able to take so many frequent vacations and get the money to see these mesmerizing places in the world.

Whenever I asked her, she never gave me a straight answer and would somehow, change the topic. I had big dreams but I forgot about them, started getting jealous of her, and went on a comparison spree. Now comes, the twist in the story.

After a few months, while shopping, I saw her [Jenny], bargaining for footwear in a local shop. She was literally fighting with the shopkeeper to reduce the cost.

The moment she saw me, her hands started trembling!.

As soon as I started asking her questions, in nervousness, she told me the truth. “I work as a Customer Service Executive in Pune and have never been to the US”. She said in a very jittery tone.

She [Jenny] also agreed that she used to Photoshop her pictures to show everyone that she is roaming around the world and having a great life whereas, in reality, she had never been abroad.

“I did all this to make my friend jealous who is a big show-off,” she said as stood there with a startled look.

I felt so gullible, having fallen into a trap that was not even laid out for me.

That day I realized, that people can be so pretentious and we should not give social media more important than required. I also decided that I will work hard to overcome all life challenges and build the best future for myself.
