Importance of New Year Resolutions

We are just 6 months away from another new year. With the holiday season and new year approaching, people will retrospect their lives and make new year resolutions with a promise to stick to that.

New year’s eve is a perfect opportunity for the people who made plans before but failed in executing them.

What the new year brings to you will depend on what you bring to the new year!

New Year Resolutions

The tradition of the New Year’s Resolutions comes all the way from 153 B.C. It comes & offers an opportunity to make a certain change and improve the living. People have preconceived notions about the New Year’s Resolutions that they cannot be completed/accomplished. We all make some resolutions every year in the month of December and we think that we will stick to them.

But, the truth is that almost 90% of us fail to achieve our resolutions and generally abandon them by the end of January only! So, I can say that we cannot stick to our resolutions even for a month. When we know what we want to achieve, we tend to concentrate on the same path and keep moving. Making resolutions during the New Year or at some other time can be helpful in several ways.

Why New Year Resolutions Are Hard To Keep?

Whenever we set a resolution and prepare ourselves to follow through, we trigger an extremely powerful “neuro-hormone” in the brain called Dopamine. Dopamine helps control the brain’s rewards and also regulates emotional responses. Though dopamine levels are quite high as we set out to accomplish our resolution(s), they eventually drop as the zeal goes down.

Breaking a resolution can cause some people to doubt their own calibre. They think that they cannot work on their resolution(s). Ultimately, they stop working towards their goals. This can cause anxiety and stress which is obviously not good to welcome the new year.

New Year’s resolution is a promise that we make to ourselves. Regardless of what resolution we commit to, the ultimate goal is to improve living in the upcoming year. Resolutions can come in many ways and forms.

Some people make a resolution to quit a bad habit; while some people make a promise to take an initiative to develop a positive habit. Some think that they will start having herbal tea while some think that they would start working out. These resolutions can be related to one’s career, health, habit, or anything. One can keep the resolution in practice while keeping the following things in mind:

  • Deciding what is important for us to achieve in life
  • Separating important and irrelevant things
  • Filtering out the negative elements
  • Making a promise of not quitting on the resolution
  • Seeking support from others
  • Motivating one’s own self
  • Creating a reward system for self
  • Building self-confidence based on successful achievement of goals
