Live-In Relationships in India in 2019 – A Deep Thought

Living together without marriage is the best way to understand common relationship problems. It helps to figure out each other. You start seeing each other’s strengths, weaknesses, compatibility level, etc.

Live in Relationships in India is particularly a new term for most people especially from the older generation. But you will be surprised to know that its origin can be traced back to ancient times. Indian Vedas has mentioned eight different kinds of marriages.

One of them is Gandharva Vivaah where both the partners have mutual consent to the marriage.

This neither involved the two families nor would the rituals take place. We can say that it was a verbal commitment. Although, in this kind of arrangement, the couple were together and united. Their roles and responsibilities were very similar to other types of marriages. They used to live together before marriage.

Legal live-in relationship rules

You may have this question if you’re considering living together before marriage– If living together in India is legal.

According to the Indian judiciary, live-in-relation is not a crime. Although narrow-minded people in our country may still be against this concept, this is not punishable. The Supreme Court has stated that if the couple (male and female) have been living in a live-in-relationship and had children. Then, the court will presume that they both were married.

The apex court has made clear that children born in a live-in-relationship will be considered legal. If the one partner walks out of the relationship, the mother would be given complete custody of the child. The court has also mentioned that children born from a living together relationship may have a right to parent’s self-made properties. But cannot inherit ancestral property.

India might be on the way to becoming a progressive country but let’s not forget, our roots are still very deep-rooted & traditional.

No matter, how modern we become.

Indian society does not accept the fact that it is alright for two adults of the opposite sex to live under one roof without marriage.

Even though it’s legal, but still, couples living together before marriage have to face several challenges from society or community.

People think that this would have a bad impact on their kids because the kids learn what they see around them.

Parents think that this (seeing live-in relationship) would affect their children in a negative way.

Final thoughts

The opinions would vary on a huge scale. Few people might say that the couple loves each other so deeply, then they should marry instead of getting into a live-in relationship. While most of the youth would state that they are socially and financially independent. They should have a right to live according to their wish and with the person, they want or love.

Now I have a question for you- Should live-in relationships be allowed in society or not? What do you think?
