Love Marriage vs Arranged Marriage– This is an unresolved debate. Few people are for love marriage and against arranged marriage while others think the opposite is right. But the truth is- their is no right and wrong as it completely depends on an individual perspective.

In love marriages, individuals choose partners on their own, while in the case of arranged marriages, partners are chosen by the family. But one thing to remember is that no kind of marriage (love or arranged), comes with a guarantee card.

The definition and significance of marriage vary around the world. Where, in a few cultures, marriage is socially recommended and considered to be a sin to get into a physical relationship without marriage.

Everyone wants a happy married life and romance in marriage is crucial. Many people opt for a love marriage because they do not believe in the concept of love after marriage.

Though Love Marriages do not hold the same kind of respect and position as the Arranged Marriages in our society. But, parents have started being more respectful towards their children’s feelings and decisions.

  • The choice of partner is in one’s own hands. One can choose the partner independently.
  • Love and Trust are the pillars of any marriage. In Love Marriages, two people are already in love.
  • The couple knows each other really well so they adjust themselves accordingly. So, there are no chances of a conflict.
  • In Love Marriage, one can marry a person from a different caste/community/religion/society.
  • Partners are compatible enough to understand each other’s needs in terms of career, freedom, or other things.
  • Equality always prevails in Love Marriages.
  • The biggest social evil i.e. Dowry can be eradicated very easily.

DEMERITS OF LOVE MARRIAGE:

  • Individuals especially if they are independent, walk out of the relationship even for trivial matters. They do not care about the opinions of their parents or relatives. 
  • Love Marriages are still unacceptable in many parts of India.
  • Youngsters mistake attraction for love.

  • There is no question of caste and community.

DEMERITS OF ARRANGED MARRIAGE:

  • Arranged Marriage is about marrying an unknown person which is generally not acceptable by this generation.
  • Though the couple has to adjust, but there is always a possibility that one partner may not like the other one.
  • The girl may find it difficult to adjust according to her in-laws and husband.
  • A serious problem of impotency or other secret ailments or problems could arise, which obviously is never disclosed at the time of marriage.
  • Arranged Marriages give a rise to social evils like Dowry.
  • The marriage may be just a contractual agreement, such as well-versed business families would do.
  • There may be a possibility of no love evolving between the partners and either of the partners may have an extra-marital affair.
  • The bride may feel homesick at times and may miss the comfort and joy of her Maayka (parent’s place).

In conclusion, we can say that both types of marriages have a good as well as evil side. It depends on the people. If love blossoms between the couple, there are no chances of a divorce and hence, the divorce rate would come down. The idea of choosing between Love Marriage and Arranged Marriage may vary from person to person. Whether it is an Arranged Marriage or a Love Marriage, it will work only if both the partners are loyal as well as committed towards each other. So, one should have the liberty to choose a life partner.
